Dear Armando Garcia, Editor of Nuestra América Access to proper medical and mental health care in immigrant detention centers is vital—yet Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and private prison companies have repeatedly failed to provide adequate care to those placed in their custody.
Two immigrants have died in the Aurora facility in Denver, Colorado in the last six years. Many more detainees have reported dangerously inadequate treatment of medical and mental conditions, including post-war psychological trauma, hemophilia, tuberculosis, and damaged eyesight from past beatings.
These insufficient medical practices threaten the health and well-being of detainees and directly impact their ability to pursue their immigration and asylum claims.
That’s why the American Immigration Council and the American Immigration Lawyers Association are urging the Department of Homeland Security oversight agencies, ICE, and ICE Health Service Corps to investigate the longstanding and systemic failure to provide adequate care to detainees at the Aurora facility.
Sincerely, |
